Light applied to the skin surface is reflected, scattered, absorbed or transmitted. There must be absorption of light energy to have a biological effect. In general, light applied to the skin is a combination of these properties.  The skin rough surface stratum corneum is the primary deterrent of light penetration into deeper tissues.  The skin surface scatters and reflects applied light energy diminishing the amount of light that can transmit through the skin into deeper regions for a biological effect.  The fate of applied light energy onto the skin is dependent on light wavelength, power, and the degree of skin rough surface scattering.

Our human biology configures the skin surface to scatter, reflect and absorb light as a protective mechanism from the environment.  The skin surface stratum corneum has a refractive index of about 1.47.  The DeepLight Infusion topical system provides an applied cream layer that more closely matches the skin surface refractive index.  This topical index matching reduces surface scattering and reflection making the skin more transparent thus allowing a higher dose of therapeutic light to penetrate into deeper tissues.  The system is effective for remote and contact LED arrays.
